Ranch and Operations Assistant

Hot Mess Ranch, Wills Point, TX

Part-time employee position (W-2, not contract), about 20 flexible hours a week, with room to grow. $20 to $25/hr depending on experience.

Love animals? Love a good plan even more? If you light up around horses, don't mind a little mud on your boots, and secretly enjoy keeping everyone else on schedule, this might be your dream part-time job. No two days look the same here. One afternoon you're filming a brand-new calf, the next you're packing for a barrel race or catching a goat who decided the fence was optional.

About us. Hot Mess Ranch is a working registered Black Angus and horse operation in Wills Point, TX, plus a family ranch brand with a large social media presence. We raise cattle, run a barrel horse program, keep goats and chickens, and make goat milk soap. The owner works a full-time day job, so a lot of ranch life happens while he is at his desk. We need someone to help keep our busy operation running smoothly and to catch some extra moments on camera.

What you will do

  1. Run the ranch calendar. Own the master calendar and task list. Send a short daily rundown of what is due, run a 30-minute Monday planning check-in, and keep our busy schedule on track. Track vet visits, due dates, feed and supply orders, race entries, brand deal deadlines and bills.

  2. Film the ranch. Shoot vertical phone video during the afternoon content windows and whenever something happens: a new calf, a horse acting up, feeding time, the goats getting out. You do not need to edit; you need to notice the moment and get the shot. You will be behind the camera, not in front of it. You never have to appear in a video.

  3. Keep the stories going. Help plan our social media content and keep a simple storyboard of every animal's ongoing story. When a calf is due, a horse heads to training or we promise an update, make sure the next chapter gets filmed and posted so no story is left hanging.

  4. Support the animals. Check that feeding and water got done and handle simple chores.

  5. Run race weekends. Handle barrel race entries, packing lists, hotel and stall bookings, and filming at the event.

Who we are looking for

  • Someone who has kept a busy household, office or small business running, and loves keeping a busy schedule on track and everyone in the loop.

  • Grew up around horses or livestock and is calm and safe around them.

  • Comfortable with a smartphone, shared calendars, texting and a simple task app.

  • Dependable, discreet and good-humored. Ranch days do not follow a script.

Nice to have

These are true bonuses, not requirements. If you are organized and good with animals, we want to hear from you even if none of these fit.

  • Rides well enough to help exercise or handle horses.

  • Barrel racing, rodeo or horse show experience.

  • Any social media or photography experience.

Schedule. About 20 hours a week built around a weekday afternoon block (roughly 2:30 to 5:30 pm) plus some race weekends. Hours flex week to week; busy race weekends are balanced by lighter weeks. Starts with a 90-day trial with clear goals, with the potential to grow toward full time.

Why you'll love it. You get to be part of a real working ranch, spend your afternoons with horses, cattle and a cast of characters with plenty of personality, and see the moments you capture shared with a big, warm community of animal lovers. This is a W-2 job with steady hours and a team that really enjoys what we do!

Returning to work after time at home? We'd love to hear from you.
